A correctly fit nut, filed to the correct height, effects the feel and "tension" of the instrument. The string spacing is important, and actually effects the sound of the instrument. I've customized the shape to accomodate the extremely low tension demanded by players like Bunny Brunel and Stanley Clarke, but the details are proprietary.
Once fitted, shaped, sanded, polished, and glued to the instrument, then the string slots are plotted and filed. The string paths are "aimed" toward their tuning peg positions.
